NEW YORK: Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said on Tuesday that he was visiting America to normalise the ties between United States and Pakistan but added that US President Barack Obama should apologise to Pakistan for the attack on the Salala check post, DawnNews reported.

Speaking at a gathering in New York, Bilawal said that drone attacks were a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty.

The US has still not apologised to the government and citizens of Pakistan over the Salala attack, he said.

Bilawal said Obama should apologise to the people of Pakistan over the attack on the check post. He moreover said that Pakistan-US relations were at a critical juncture.

Obama has brief encounter with Pakistan’s president on the sidelines of a large group meeting at NATO summit
Mon May 21, 2012

CHICAGO (Reuters) – President Barack Obama spoke briefly with President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan on Monday but the leaders did not hold an individual meeting during the NATO summit in Chicago as there was still no deal under which Pakistan would reopen its supply routes for NATO soldiers in Afghanistan.

At a press conference later, Obama said the U.S. and Pakistan were making “diligent progress” on the supply line dispute, but indicated a deal had not been clinched. He acknowledged “real challenges” in relations with Pakistan.

Zardari was a last-minute addition to the list of leaders at the summit that Obama hosted in his home town of Chicago.

The Pakistani leader met on Sunday with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, but U.S. officials said there were no plans for a meeting with Obama.

The brief encounter between Obama and Zardari, which took place in the presence of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, may allow Zardari to avoid appearing as if he was snubbed by Obama.

U.S. and Pakistani officials have said they are confident they can reach a deal to reopen the supply lines, but it appeared unlikely that an announcement would at the NATO summit.

Zardari also shook hands with Obama earlier in the day.

No formal meeting with Pakistan President

Hopes for a meeting on the sidelines of the NATO summit bringing together the U.S., Afghan and Pakistani presidents appear to have dimmed, and analysts say this is due to the lack of a full agreement with Pakistan on reopening NATO supply lines into Afghanistan.

President Barack Obama met on Sunday in Chicago with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, but his schedule includes no one-on-one interaction with Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari, and White House staff say the schedule is not expected to change.

NEW YORK, May 22 (APP): Following is the text of the speech by Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, while addressing PPP workers and support in New York on Monday night:

I have traveled to America at what may be the most critical point in the 65 year relationship between Pakistan and the United States. For one year our countries have weathered a series of crises that have tested our partnership.

The unilateral action in Abbottabad made many in Pakistan question whether the United States actually considered Pakistan a military ally in our common war on terrorism and extremism.

The Raymond Davis fiasco made many in our country question the roe and authority of CIA activities in Pakistan.

The continuing unilateral US drone attacks on Pakistani soil was a constant irritant to Pakistani public opinion. — both as a clear violation of our sovereignty and the toll of collateral damage to innocent victims. These illegal strikes, that violate international law and even the US’s war powers act, must end.

And possibly most egregiously the NATO attack which left 24 Pakistani soldiers dead at Salala has not resulted in an apology to the families or to our nation.

I would like the American public to consider what their reaction would have been if American troops had been killed in such an attack on their border with Mexico. I urge President Obama to show some courage. I understand he is running for reelection but if he is the same man who inspired the world with his message of hope and change the future of NATO mission in Afghanistan should be more important than poll numbers.

Pakistan deserves an apology.

It is ludicrous to keep demanding Pakistan do more under these circumstances. Over 4,000 Pakistani troops have been martyred in this war. That is more than all NATO forces combined.

It is time for the US to do more.

It was heartening to see a real friend of Pakistan, Turkey’s Prime Minister, address the Pakistani Parliament for the second time in three years yesterday. Largely such addresses are ceremonial in nature which exude goodwill for both the host and the guest. The Turkish Prime Minister’s address was more than that. Speaking extempore in his native Turkish, the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Teyyip Erdogan, appreciated Pakistan for a thriving democracy and said that Parliament in any democracy is supreme and that no power can stand in the way of a strong parliament.

This is a damning thing for a foreign dignitary to say about powers in our country who do everything in the name of “rule of law” to circumvent the parliament and will of the people. Yes…we are talking about the Opposition, the judiciary, establishment and their touts in the media. While the media and their paymasters harp the tune of “Mujrim Wazir-e-Azam” and whether the opposition gave space to the government and that the Turkish Prime Minister’s address provided respite to a “beleaguered Prime Minister”, the fact remains that a nation that has also suffered at the hands of military adventurism, Turkey sees Pakistan possibly coming out of the whirlpool like it has.

We at LUBP, would like to thank the Turkish Prime Minister for his excellent address and giving us a sermon which will hopefully have a lasting impact on our opposition, judiciary, establishment and their media touts. We also want to commend the Pakistani parliament for being firmly united for the last four years, possibly ending the days of military adventurism backed by judicial support in the country.

IIUI rector on leave: Personal decision or Saudi pressure?
By Peer Muhammad

Source: Express Tribune

ISLAMABAD: Diplomatic pressure may have had a strong bearing on International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) rector Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik’s decision to go on indefinite leave, sources say. Although dispelling the impression that he had been removed from office, Professor Malik admitted that he was going on indefinite leave on behalf of Pakistan’s Iqbal Academy.

“I have received the notification from the presidency about my ex-Pakistan leave and the Quaid-e-Azam University vice chancellor will perform additional duties as rector in my absence,” Professor Malik told The Express Tribune. Malik said that he had offered his resignation to the president himself in case certain people were unhappy with him or were exerting pressure, but the president did not accept his offer. The professor said he was supposed to deliver lectures on Iqbal in different foreign universities and that his leave application had been pending for a while.
However, the rector also admitted that complaints were made by some faculty members of the Arabic department against him to the Saudi embassy, which were then forwarded to the presidency.

Sources said that the Saudi diplomatic mission was unhappy with the rector over his “liberal policies”, particularly when it came to accommodating members of the Shia community. “During the recent cultural week held at the university, the Saudi embassy asked the rector to not invite the Iranian ambassador and his wife to the event, but the rector refused to comply,” the source added.

The sources pointed out that the Saudis also questioned the rector’s moves to sign memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with Iranian universities. They also complained to President Asif Ali Zardari saying that the university was not being run according to the objectives for which it was established during Ziaul Haq’s regime, and that “enlightened moderation” was being promoted instead.

During the 1980s, the IIUI’s prime objective was to teach Sharia during the Afghan war against the Soviet Union.
Professor Malik said that some elements wanted to turn the university into a “Jamat-e-Islami University”, but his stance was different. “Islam has many interpretations and some people of traditional thinking are propagating that I am going to promote an agenda and bring changes in the university culture,” he maintained.
“It is not the Zia era, the political reality has changed and we need the latest knowledge and technology to compete with the world,” he emphasised.

When contacted, presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said that there was no information about the resignation or removal of the rector as far his information is concerned. “We issue the notification and I should have known if there was such a development. I also found out from a news ticker being carried by a TV channel,” he maintained.
Despite repeated attempts, comments from the Saudi embassy could not be obtained.

In his incomparable poem, “Bachay ki dua” or a “Child’s supplication”, (Baang-e-Dara) Iqbal presented in 12 lines what should be the mission of any child from his early life. We have read this poem all our lives and without doubt, it is one of the simplest, yet best, poem written by Iqbal.

Ansar Abbasi, the apex investigative editor of The News, known for his vitriol against the democratic dispensation and wish for a Taliban style of “Gavernance” in Pakistan, has been at the forefront of running a campaign against the PPP along with his gang members like Ahmed Noorani, Umar Cheema, Usman Manzoor from his newspaper and sister TV channel. It is also speculated that he has roots with banned outfits like Hizbut Tahrir and there is empirical evidence that he supports the cause of all Jihadi outfits. In his weekly article in Daily Jang, which appears on Monday, he tries to act like a “God Fearing” social reformer as he knows that Jang’s readership is tilted towards the right wing. Whether he is one, only Allah knows, but his writings do not reflect that!

His article on May 14, 2012, is titled “Meray liye Allah hee kaafi hay” which is the urdu translation of a Quranic verse “Hasbi Allah wa ni’mal wakil”. In his article, Ansar Abbasi has recounted the threats he has received and all the conspiracies, threats, abuses that has endured in the last many years because he considers Journalist as an “Ibadat”. His “Ibadat” is that he keeps a watchful eye in “public interest” on governments of the day. He even mentions that in his career it is “quite possible that his information is inaccurate, his sources may be tainted, my analysis can be wrong, but he never writes because of ill-will and personal interest”. He even has to write that “Rizq is something that Allah provides and that despite of all the efforts to stop his Rizq, he is committed because he has faith in Allah!”.

Now let us ask Mr. Ansar Abbasi, if Rizq is provided to you by Allah, then who provides Rizq to all those against whom you write and speak? If you believe that you are doing a mission, then those against whom you write and speak also believe that they have a mission to complete, don’t they? If you believe that for you “Allah is enough” then this is what others also believe. In essence, what kind of an article is this? come out of this love for yourself. As they say “Apnay baray mayn khush fahmi aur doosron kay baray mayn gahalat fahmi” destroys a person and so it seems that Ansar Abbasi is now using a public forum to prove that his “Intention is always right” and that he is a good man!

Ansar Abbasi should recite Allama Iqbal’s Bachay Kee Dua every day. Hopefully, he will improve because with his “good intentions” he is supporting the cause of Taliban and the Jihadi extremists who are trying their best to destroy our nation and send us into dark ages. Remember, “Zalim ka saath denay wala bhee Zalim hay!”

It was quite shocking reading the decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in the contempt case against Prime Minister of Pakistan at the end of which there was a poetic and emotional moral speech like piece. It was from one of the judges from the bench that was hearing and decided the case. A judge, obviously, needs not be an emotional lecturer rather a judge ought to be free of emotions and a law adjudicator. If one goes trough the extra note of the judge, it becomes evident that a moral speech is attempted to appeal to the emotions of the people.

Although, I am not a lawyer, but to some extent, know the ABC of law and also the implications of the court decisions, and since the decision once delivered is a public property, I have every right to discuss it.

Punishments are meant to reform not to disgrace and condemn only, and the poetic piece in the judgment clearly makes mockery of the elected and representative leadership of this nation. It would have been more appropriate had the decision consisted of only reasoning of law instead of supplementing it with some emotional poetic lecture.

Before I try to make a future plan based on morality and rule of law-as the extra note stands for- let us first go back to the beginning of the issue.

The current issue can be traced back to the court order in NRO case-which needed the PM or executive to right a letter to the Swiss authorities so that cases against the president of Islamic Republic of Pakistan could be reopened- which the PM or executive refused-for obvious reasons- to comply with. The court charged and convicted PM with contempt and issued the detailed judgment.

As the judgment preaches morality, let us make our own perspective of morality and ask few questions from ourselves. If rule of law- equality before law- is to be followed, then what about the judges who took oath under the first PCO of Musharraf? If we are ready to forgive them for their crime–standing by a dictator and giving him constitution amending power—in order to let them reform themselves, why can’t we do that with the elected president? If we are ready to forgive some one in a crime committed before the eyes of the whole nation, why we can’t in a crime which is yet to be proven?

If Pakistan is to run under the principle of morality–as the poetic spot of judgment seems to be preaching- the rule of law then demands either of the following options exercised.

The first option is that Prime Minister shall leave the office-morally or legally- but before doing that he should press his parliamentary majority to declare the first PCO of Musharraf and its subsequent endorsement by judiciary and parliament as unconstitutional. So that no one would stand by dictators and take oath under PCO in future and those who have already done can be sent home.

The Prime Minister, in the supreme forum of them all, the National Parliament

The second option would be that we forgive all for their wrongdoings they have once done. We shall forgive judges for taking oath under PCO and giving the power of amending constitution to a dictator. We shall forgive Musharraf for subverting constitution. We shall forgive Nawaz Sharif for leaving Pakistan in a state of chaos and helplessness and fleeing the bars through secret talks and doors. However, we shall also forgive Mr. President for his alleged crime and PM for contempt.

These options, though, may sound unrealistic and emotional but there is no way out either. If morality is the standard and rule of law the rule then all shall be treated on equality basis. We should not pick some people to be punished and some to be spared. For those punished selectively will be right in claiming martyrdom through punishment.

“With an apology to Khalil Gibran”, I would like to end my moral reasoning by adding his poem in my own words.

Pity the nation that punishes judges for taking oath under PCO on Monday.

And let spare others who have done it just on Sunday.

Pity the nation where judgments are supplemented with moral speeches and poetry.

Not solely by legal codes and law commentary.

Pity the nation where law adjudicators seek support in people’s emotions.

Not in sanctioned laws and constitutions.

Pity the nation who’s elected President is forced to face cases and humiliation outside.

However, the violator of constitution is obliged to play with the destiny of the people inside.

Pity the nation where the decisions of court tell that the offender wanted to become, at its hands, a martyr.

Rather than, allowing the law to speak ignoring offender’s desire.

Ansar Abbasi, the right wing journalist known for his love for the Taliban, Osama Bin Ladin, Hafiz Saeed, Islamic Revolutions, Chief Justice of Pakistan, ISI and Army Chiefs and for his hatred for anyone and anything PPP, has made a desperate attempt to cajole a “decent lady” known as Dr. Fehmida Mirza, honorable speaker of National Assembly, to make a decision which is not in her hand any more!

The decision the “Decent Lady” has to take is to send the Prime Minister packing by disqualifying him from being a member of National Assembly, under the epic judgment of the mindless and self serving judges of the Supreme Court.

The last two paragraphs of his “news report” appearing simultaneously in Jang and The News on Thursday, May 10, 2012 is nothing but enjoyable:

“However, still the decent lady from interior Sindh is expected to do what is no more in her hand. Though she has always been a PPP loyalist, still Fehmida always conducted herself decently and without having being politicized to an extent where she could be treated as a mere jiyali.
The lady even kept herself in distance from the controversies surrounding her husband Zulfiqar Mirza, who used to pick up fights in the political arena on the conspiratorial wink of his extremely influential friend and had openly claimed that whatever he has earned in his life including even the clothes he wears it was all because of President Asif Ali Zardari.”

In our opinion Ansar Abbasi has committed a big sin as women cannot be in a position of power as per the teaching propogated by his masters. How can he ask a “Decent Lady” to make a decision which she shouldn’t be taking? Right Ansar? You should be chastised with 33 lashes for making advances on a “Decent Lady”.

Thursday, 10 May 2012: Hundreds of Pakistanis in the UK protested against Shia genocide in Pakistan at 10 Downing Street, London. The protest was organized by the Majlis-e-Ulama Shia Europe (Shia Scholar Council of Europe).

The participants protested against the ongoing genocide of Shia Muslims across various parts of Pakistan right from Parachinar to Karachi and from Quetta to Gilgit Baltistan. They expressed their anger at the enabling of further Shia genocide by Pakistan army through the creation of the so called “Defence of Pakistan Council” comprising the Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (Jamaat-ud-Dawa).

A petition was delivered for the Pakistani Prime Minister who was in 10 Downing Street at the time of protest.

The protest was generally ignored by Pakistan’s right wing journalists as well as pseudo-liberal journalists most of whom remain loyal to Pakistan’s military establishment.

According to daily The News:

An unprecedented level of protests met Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani as he arrived at 10 Downing Street to hold talks with British Prime Minister David Cameron Thursday.

The protestors from Majlis-e-Ulema Shia Europe began gathering outside the residence of the British prime minister an hour before Prime Minister Gilaniís arrival.

Pakistan Peopleís Party (PPP) activists had also gathered outside Number 10 to greet Prime Minister Gilani and to protest the judicial decision convicting him for contempt of court, but it was clear from the start that anti-Shia genocide protesters greatly outnumbered the pro-PPP activists.

The scale of the protests was so extreme that even Prime Minister Cameron asked the Pakistani premier if he felt safe walking around in London knowing that some activists were staging vociferous protests against him. While tens of thousands of protesters marched outside Downing Street against David Cameronís increasingly unpopular government and the austerity cuts as the two premiers met, on his way to a luncheon at the Savoy Hotel, Cameron joked with Prime Minister Gilani by asking him if the latter felt comfortable taking a short stroll to the venue amidst the protests.

On a lighter note, Prime Minister Gilani told Pakistanis present at the gathering, ìWhen we were coming to launch Conservative Friends of Pakistan in the same car, David Cameron asked me if I would like to take a walk knowing that PML-N and other protesters are out there.

Meanwhile, bitter and angry Shia protesters alleged that the PPP-led government had failed to protect the Shia community in Pakistan and that the leaders had failed to prosecute even a single terrorist involved in sectarian killings.

Syed Ali Raza, the leader of the protesters told The News: “We are saddened by this visit because the prime minister has failed to account the genocide of thousands of innocent people. Therefore we are demanding that Prime Minister Gilani return immediately back to Pakistan to share in the sadness of weeping widows, orphaned children and mothers who have lost their support of life. We want to make it clear to the prime minister that we will not tolerate the criminal negligence of [the] Pakistani government on the genocide of the Shia people. We will use every platform to raise our voice against the oppression on Shias in Pakistan.”

After having abused Faiz’ “Hum Dekhen Gay” and Jalib’s “Dastoor”, it’s time to make Kahlil Gibran turn in his grave. His epic poem, “Pity the Nation” has been referred to in the detailed judgment of the Supreme Court’s eight member bench on the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s contempt case. Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, whose relations with the anti-PPP establishment are well known, has written a 6 pager additional note in which he has shown his poetic side. He has referred to “Pity the Nation” and added verses of his own. A cursory view of his poem is nothing but a contempt of the Parliament and its elected members for which a reference should be sent to the Supreme Judicial Council and he be brought to the Parliamentary Committee that oversees the breaches of privilege.

While the verdict is out and awaits to be challenged at appropriate stages, the daggers have already been sharpened to run a political campaign at the back of a judicial support for the next elections. Having failed to get rid of the PPP led government through various judgments, this is one last attempt before the presentation of the final budget of the present parliament. With the media through their touts like Kamran Khan, Mohammad Malick, Kashif Abbasi, Ansar Abbasi and many more, a campaign on high moral grounds is being run against the PPP. just to make their point, the USD 60 million are now referred to “500 carore rupay kee krupshion” to make it look all too big. The media makes one PPP representative sit in its program and makes 4 anti government cast belonging to PML-N, PTI, a lawyer and a journalist to keep our blood boiling for 50 minutes.

Justice Asif Saeed Khosa is the son-in-law of Justice Naseem Hasan Shah, one of the judges that ordered hanging of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Justice Shah was the one who restored Nawaz Sharif’s government after Ghulam Ishaq Khan used 58-2 B in 1993. Justice Khosa is also the brother of Tariq Khosa, the blue eyed boy in the FIA of the sitting judges. His appointment to a one man commission to investigate the “Memogate” has already been criticized wholeheartedly forcing him to decline his appointment. Naturally, Justice Asif Khosa has to extract revenge for his brother and also to satisfy the ego of his masters in the establishment.

Anyways, PPP is not going to run away and will do the work it set out to do: provide a stable form of government to Pakistan. Let the parliament complete it’s term; let elections take place; kick the PPP out through normal process, but just don’t abuse the likes of Jalib, Faiz and now Kahlil Gibran for your own ulterior motives.

Pakistan’s largest media conglomerate, the Jang Group, which has publications like Daily Jang and Daily The News as well as GEO TV under its umbrella, has been running a façade of a campaign by the name of “Aman kee Asha” as a Joint Venture with the Times of India for the last two and half years. The campaign coming from Jang Group shows high standards of hypocrisy and misleading public from the media group which has nothing to do with promotion of peace! The anchor publication named “Jang” which has a literal meaning of “Daily War”, how can they be promoters of peace?

Under the Aman kee Asha, a two day conference by the name of “Dividends” is being organized in Lahore on May 7 and 8, 2012, where the honorable Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yousaf Raza Gilani is slated to inaugurate the event! Now the question is, why the War Group wants the “Mujrim Wazir-e-Azam” who, as per them, has been floundering the judgments of the “azad aur muazziz adliya” of Pakistan been invited to inaugurate the event? That is a question for the War Group and its proponents to answer. The Jang Group in all its programs uses the term “Mujrim Wazir-e-Azam” for the last 9 days or so.

As far as we the supporters of the PPP and followers of democratic dispensation are concerned, hereby request the honorable and most importantly the elected Prime Minister of Pakistan, having a command of a large majority of the parliament, to shun this façade of an event which is nothing but a forum to promote the business interests of the hawkish, right wing and anti-PPP media group. No matter how much you pamper them, how much you support their “genuine” efforts, the PPP haters will remain PPP haters. After you inaugurate and leave the event, it will become a platform for the likes of Shahbaz Sharif and Imran Khan, who will use the opportunity to lambast the Prime Minister, the PPP and the government and cite “Krupshion” and “Bad Gavernunce” as the reasons for all the ills of Pakistan. The Indians will have a field day in making fun of our country when they see such opposite responses in the country.

Mr. Prime Minister, this is the same group whose senior editor, Ansar Abbasi justifies the violent acts of extremists. Please see that this is merely a token and cosmetic gesture that will use your presence to gain importance while simultaneously giving your right-wing, Pro-Taliban opponents to bash you politically.

Prime Minister Sahab, you are very dear to us and we cant see you being humiliated by people like Kamran Khan, Ansar Abbasi, Hamid Mir, Mohamed Mallick, Shaheen Sehbai day-in and day-out, and then we see you giving them a badge for creating peace between India and Pakistan.

The PPP has to come out of its old policy of appeasing the foe. The foe will always be a foe. Concentrate on your own, who have no place else to go. Those who cannot respect you and the office of a democratically elected Prime Minister who still enjoys majority support in an elected Parliament; how can you support them?
